Program Notes

Autumn and Caroline are two very different women leading very different lives. On the surface, they would appear to share absolutely nothing in common- Autumn is an idealistic dreamer with an obsession with arts and crafts, while Caroline is a high- maintenance social climber with ambitions of bagging a wealthy husband. But when the two women meet by chance while waiting in an airport terminal, not only do they discover the one thing they never imagined they would have in common, but they are also forced to reexamine the values which made the two so different in the first place.

— Charles Halka

Layover, performed by New Fangled Opera at the 2013 New Fangled Festival of Opera in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Music by Charles Halka, Libretto by Katherine Krueger.

Cast: Caroline - Christina Paz ; Autumn - Kourtni Noll

★★★★★

For the Charles Halka and Kate Krueger Layover, expect a complex musical journey that’s part Hindemith, part Debussy, with a little Schoenberg thrown in as the young composer recreated the nuances of natural human dialog with his score. Our two sopranos, Stacey Sands and Samina Aslam, capture the delicate chromaticism in the piece with aplomb. The accompanying libretto was an early work of Ms. Krueger’s, but it shows some sophistication and a subtle humor that belies this fact, and she’s doing a very fine job in her directorial debut too.

The program also includes Sarah Hersh and Brad Fairchild’s “Layover,” which offers a curiously humorous twist on incest and Charles Halka and Katherine Krueger’s “Layover” – yes, a second opera with the same title – a culture clash on love, fidelity and the nature of beauty between two women in an airport waiting room.
